Here's a screenshot of my pressure curve setting. I took the top right node and dragged it half way left. I liked that, but then I took it even further left, as you can see. This compresses the faint-to-bold range of a brush into a much narrower range of pressure. So I can get a maximally bold stroke without pressing very hard at all. Immediately the tools were working much better for me.
This is the first thing I recommend everyone do to make it possible to draw with comfortable, light gestures. The pencil is a sensitive tool and feels best handled lightly, in my opinion!
